Maree Baker-Galloway

Anderson Lloyd

After a year off exploring the rivers and mountains of the United States, Maree started practising law full time in Wanganui with the Crown Solicitor’s office. From there she moved to Anderson Lloyd in Dunedin, her home town. From the start Maree has specialised in litigation and, in particular, environmental law and she has years of relevant and varied experience on which she can rely when analysing the law and advising clients as to solutions and strategies.

Maree has been fortunate to have acted for a range of clients, with differing approaches to projects and litigation. She advises individual clients one on one and also has acted for large organisations such as Fish and Game, OceanaGold and Meridian Energy where the legal team is often working with large teams of consultants on complex projects and cases.

Where she is able to, Maree also provides assistance to public interest groups such as Whitewater New Zealand and Public Access New Zealand.

Maree specialises in environmental law, specifically the Resource Management Act and the Conservation Act and related legislation. She chose that field because she finds it an extremely interesting, varied and unpredictable area of law that is influential in shaping the country we live in. It affects everyone directly or indirectly whether it is by enabling developments and infrastructure that provide employment and a high standard of living, or by ensuring special places that are important to New Zealanders are protected.

Within the environmental law field Maree is interested in issues and developments in the non-urban environment – such as tourism and other activities in the conservation estate or the use of New Zealand’s rivers, marine areas and landscapes. She has particular expertise in the law relating to freshwater. She is also interested in the advances being made in buildings, technology, emissions and energy usage that fall under the category ‘green growth’ or ‘clean tech’.

Maree is on the National Executive for the Resource Management Law Association and has been in that position since 2007.
