Wayne Gumley

Wayne Gumley is a senior lecturer in the Department of Business Law and Taxation, Monash University,

Wayne began his career as a solicitor in general practice in regional Victoria, then took a position with the Australian Government Solicitor's Office in Melbourne, where he practised in administrative law and revenue law, and reached the position of Principal Legal Officer, before moving to Monash.

Whilst at Monash, Wayne has maintained strong links with industry, including a sabbatical with law firm McKimmie Matthews in Calgary, Canada, and tax training and consulting roles in Melbourne with chartered accountants KPMG Peat Marwick and Pitcher Partners. He has also served on a range of professional advisory committees at the Law Institute of Victoria, Australasian Insurance Law Association and National Environmental Law Association. From 2003 to 2010, he was editor of the NELA journal, the National Environmental Law Review.

He has taught a wide range of taxation commercial law and has personally established a range of environmental law units at undergraduate and graduate levels, including some that have been adopted as core units in programs offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Arts. He has served as the deputy head of department and as director of the Graduate Tax Program for the Department of Business Law and Taxation. He received a Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006 and has also been involved in several faculty and university-wide programs to promote education for sustainability.

Wayne has a broad range of research interests including administrative law, taxation law, ecological tax reform, environmental law and corporate environmental responsibility. He was accepted as a member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law in April 2014. Wayne’s current research projects are on environmental taxes and tax expenditure reform, environmental impact assessment, corporate social responsibility and extended product responsibility. He is currently a member of the CSIRO Cluster Collaborative Research Project, Wealth from Waste, which is a multi-disciplinary project in partnership with CSIRO, four Australian universities and Yale in the USA.
